Mother Church's Nurturing Embrace

The reports kept coming in. Missionaries of Charity nuns in Calcutta charged with torturing a seven-year-old child left in their care. Allegations of abuse and torture by Poor Sisters of Nazareth in Scottish child care facilities. Frightening tales of terrible torments endured by orphans and foundlings in the care of Catholic orders in Quebec and other Canadian provinces. Then, of course, there are the multitude of cases of priestly predation that pop up in diocese all across America. The priests and vestal virgins of the Roman Catholic Church do not always stop with sexually abusing or torturing children and susceptible adults subject to their authority. When secular authorities unleash the dogs of Catholism on civil populations, we often are given extreme examples of how Mother Church deals with those who dare oppose her. Despite the continuing efforts of Romish spin doctors, non-Catholic history records the Catholic pogroms against the Waldenses, the Albigenses, Jews, Huguenots, Serbian Orthodox, Gypsies, and others. Some may argue that these things all happened a long time ago and that the priesthood of Mother Church no longer behave mercilessly against those who have not bent the knee to the Catholic potentate. They speak of ecumenicalism and separated brethren and baptisms of desire. But have things really changed? A few years ago, a Catholic online news service carried a report that two Catholic priests had been sentenced to death in Rwanda. The priests had been charged with participating in the murder of 2000 people during the Rwandan genocides of the middle 1990's. Father Jean Francois Kayiranga and Edouard Nkurikiye were convicted last Thursday of luring ethnic Tutsis into their church, only to have militant Hutus bulldoze the building with the people inside. Other priests, nuns, and church workers have been accused of collaborating with the Hutu-led government in carrying out the massacres.
